Franklin Police Department celebrates Grand Opening of New Facility

The Franklin Police Department and The City of Franklin celebrated the Grand Opening of the new Franklin Police Station located at 501 West Madison Street on Thursday, May 2 with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Franklin-Simpson Chamber of Commerce and members of the community.

Construction of the 24,000 square-foot-facility, began in November 2022, but the vision to make the new building a reality started in 2018. The location is within proximity to each of the five schools and easily accessible to downtown Franklin. Most impressively, the new police department with its community campus is the first of its kind in the state of Kentucky.

With a spacious and inviting lobby, the new police station includes a community room for future family activities, an exercise room for officers, and the growth opportunity for up to 35 police officers. There are currently 25 officers on staff, but as the community population grows, the need for more officers will increase.

The station’s amenities are a strong recruiting tool for finding new officers, and the larger-scale building even has the potential to host police in-service training events, which will in turn bring economic benefits.

Public city meetings will be held at the new police building beginning July 1, adding a safety zone for those platforms but also plenty of space for hosting meetings for planning and zoning, board of adjustments and city commission. The pavilion outside can be used as an open-air meeting opportunity on nice days and the community can visually see those meetings taking place.

The hope is that as young children grow and create a mentorship with police officers they will feel inspired to stay local and pursue a career in law enforcement or work within community service.

The parking lot will hold 100 public vehicles in addition to two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. While the police officers will have a separate parking area on the campus.

The current police station located at 100 South Court Street was built in 1999. At the time, the police station housed approximately 11 officers.
